Sustainability is a global challenge in general and environmental sustainability is a pressing global issue in specific. The globe is facing a projected population exceeding nine billion by 2050 and water scarcity, shortages in the food supply and energy. Additionally, the need to protect human health. These challenges demand Environmental sustainability.
Egypt is facing the same challenges, although it is regarded as one of the least countries adding to the global emissions yet, it is one of the most counties affected by it. Besides, Egypt is facing a gigantic problem in its inability to manage its waste, which in turn hinders its ability to attain environmental sustainability. That affects its citizens; as it’s the reason behind illness, gas emissions, and the like.
To aid in waste management, reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover of solid waste are helpful. Additionally, to allow involvement of people in a pro-environment behavior, like recycling, it is important to determine their awareness of environmental sustainability, which can induce a change in their behavior towards the environment.
The research findings shows that Awareness of Environmental Sustainability has a positive yet weak impact on Recycling Behavior. Meaning that the target population is aware of the importance of environmental sustainability and it positively affects their tendency to participate in recycling behavior yet weak participation takes place.
Furthermore, certain demographic and psychographic moderating factors do affect the strength of the relationship, between awareness of environmental sustainability and recycling behavior, yet the impact is insignificant.
